When you come to the New Zealand International Convention Centre (NZICC), you get to experience more than just a world-class venue. Our location in the heart of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland means you’ve also got the best of the city at your doorstep. Whether it’s feasting on fabulous food, taking in the epic views, wandering our wonderful waterfront or setting sail to an iconic island, our team share some of their favourite spots that can be easily reached from NZICC.
Where to eat and drink
SkyCity precinct
Some of Auckland’s finest dining experiences are mere footsteps away from NZICC in the SkyCity precinct.
Whether it’s a team lunch, a dinner with delegates, or you simply want to slip away in a small group (or alone) to sample some local cuisine, there’s something to suit all scenarios.
Chef Al Brown is a stalwart of the Auckland restaurant scene and is well-known for his flavoursome yet relaxed approach to food, with a focus on local ingredients. Depot’s range of fresh oysters sourced from across New Zealand are the perfect way to try some Kiwi kaimoana (seafood) while you’re here, but there’s plenty more on the menu too. It’s a busy place with a buzzy atmosphere, and many of the NZICC team love to pop in for a coffee, snack or something more substantial.
Next door to Depot and also created by Kiwi chef Al is this New York-style deli, which is great for a coffee, a stack of pancakes, a generous sandwich or a tasty bagel. The crispy chicken sandwich, which comes with a side of dipping gravy, gets the seal approval from NZICC Sales Manager Australia Jessica Carlson, who hails from the States herself.
Located in the Horizon Hotel right next to NZICC, The Grill is an upscale steak and seafood restaurant. Showcasing the best of New Zealand’s incredible produce, it’s a great place to taste the best of Aotearoa. While the meat is exquisite, there is plenty for non-meat eaters too. NZICC Associate Director of Sales Sam Horsnell says the mac and cheese is not to be missed!
City Works Depot
A one-minute walk from NZICC will take you to City Works Depot, a hub of city offices and apartments that is dotted with eateries and drinking spots.
Norma Taps is a retro-style bar with an Italian vibe, serving Neopolitan pizzas and cocktails on tap. It’s warm, welcoming and comes recommended by NZICC Event Planner Simone Avison. “They’ve got really good food, the staff are always lovely and there’s a great bingo night on the first Wednesday of every month!”
And just next door, 3 Beans Coffee Roasters are an office favourite for the all-important morning coffee fix, freshly baked muffin or out-of-this-world level cheese scone (with a generous dose of butter!).
Victoria Street West
A regular for the NZICC team, Brewd Hawt Chicken Co is just a short wander away on Victoria Street West. A fan favourite, NZICC Event Planner Tricia MacLennan says they have "the best ever" fried chicken at spice levels for every palette. Certainly one to check-out if you're after delicious, casual eats.
Where to stroll
Victoria Park
Wander down the road from City Works Depot and you’ll find yourself at Victoria Park. A delightful urban greenspace where you may spot cricketers in summer, football players in winter, and walkers and joggers all year round. It’s a handy spot to stretch your legs or sit under a tree and relax between sessions – look out for the NZICC lanyards among the people relaxing there over lunch or after work.
Waterfront
Head downtown towards the jewel in Auckland’s crown: the glittering Waitematā Harbour. Turn to your left and you’ll be in Viaduct Harbour, where elegant eateries abound and rows of gleaming white yachts bob in the waters beside them. If you’re in the mood for more walking, it takes approximately 25 minutes to meander through Wynyard Quarter, along to Westhaven Marina, where super yachts share space with smaller crafts owned by local sailors, and all the way to the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
Alternatively, turn right and head towards the Downtown Ferry Terminal for a more industrial feel. You’ll soon come to the bustling Port of Auckland, where container ships from across the globe dock to deliver their wares to the region.
“It’s so varied along the waterfront,” says NZICC Director of Sales Alana Bicknell, “and a great way to see the city thriving. Plus being near the sea is always refreshing for the soul.”
Where to see the city
Sky Tower
The geography of Tāmaki Makaurau is truly unique, as it sits surrounded by two separate harbours and is studded with about 50 volcanic cones (don’t worry, they’re mostly dormant). The best way to get the lay of the land is to see it all from on high. Take a trip up the iconic Sky Tower, just a block away from NZICC, and get 360-degree views of the region. “If you’re just visiting, it’s the best way to see where you are and where you’d like to go,” says Alana.
Where to sail to
Waiheke Island
An idyllic destination for visitors and Aucklanders alike is Waiheke Island, a Mediterranean-style paradise featuring beautiful beaches and award-winning wineries. It’s a 35-minute ferry ride from the Downtown Ferry Terminal, and makes an excellent day trip if you have the time. Jessica describes Waiheke as her “happy place” – in particular the long lunch at Poderi Crisci Italian restaurant and winery. But there are no wrong choices on Waiheke, says Alana, “No matter where you go on the island, the food is exceptional.”
Where to drive to
Matakana
If you do have more time and you want to hit the road, Simone suggests a trip to the charming township of Matakana, about an hour’s drive north of the city. “It’s a beautiful place, with great beaches to explore and the weekend farmer’s market is excellent.”
