Our venue is grounded in the traditions of Aotearoa New Zealand.
Culture sits at the heart of our venue. We welcome guests and clients to experience the spirit of Tāmaki Makaurau and engage with Māori culture in ways that feel genuine, memorable and grounded in true manaakitanga (hospitality).
The tangata whenua, or people of the land, that NZICC stands upon, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, gifted our building the name Te Tumu. Literally translated as "the tree stump", it reflects the strength of our relationship and our shared commitment to creating a destination rooted in heritage and built for growth.
Like the tumu, the core of a tree that anchors and nourishes its branches, Te Tumu NZICC is a place where connections take root and reach outward — across people, cultures and ideas. However you choose to engage, we can help you connect with these cultural elements in ways that feel authentic, welcoming and meaningful.
In Aotearoa New Zealand, we proudly incorporate indigenous Māori culture – including language, customs, and values – into our events. We offer unique cultural experiences that honour the mana of Tāmaki Makaurau while enhancing the delegate journey. All cultural experiences, including whakatau, pōwhiri, and cultural performance, are delivered in partnership with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, the tangata whenua of central Auckland.
As visitors to our space, it is important that you feel both welcomed and supported.

Te Raukura Hawke (Tee), of Ngāti Whātua Ōrakei, is NZICC’s Pou Tikanga, guiding how Māori culture, values and protocol are woven into every part of the experience. Raised speaking te reo Māori on the marae, Tee brings deep knowledge of tikanga and ensures our actions align with people, place and purpose. Tee helps clients navigate tikanga with clarity and confidence, creating culturally safe environments where all guests feel respected, supported and at ease.
